Fishing in Tampa Bay is still consistent with over size and top slot reds being caught as well as some monster gator trout. Wading has been the trick to getting the fish to eat MirrOdines and DOA shad tails.

My clients and I are targeting sandy spots along mangrove shore lines and following the fish off the flat during afternoon ebb tides. While the fish transition off the flat we catch them by making long casts with plugs to cover water, before finding troughs and potholes near the flats’ edge to target them with jigs. Topwater bite at dusk has been great!

Got out with Tim and his buddy Adam for an afternoon wading trip in the skiff on Tampa Bay. We launched around 2 and headed out to a near by flat.We hopped out of the skiff to wade and it didn’t take long for us to start hooking into redfish, trout and snook. In the last hour of the evening I hooked into a big fish that we all though was a snook, upon getting it closer we realized it was a monster trout at 28″! Just as I was about to land it Adam doubled up with a stud 32″ red. Great way to end the evening.

We fished until sundown and ended with a final tally of roughly 20 fish between the three of us, with redfish to 32″, trout to 28″ and snook to 26″.

Got out with Don for a morning on the water in Tampa Bay in our kayaks. After a little delay in the morning we promptly launched into a flat calm morning on the bay around 8. The bite was slow at first throwing topwaters but heated up real fast when we switched to a sub surface plug.

Don’s first fish of the morning was a whopping 35″ and roughly 15 pounds in only a few feet of water! After dolphins tore up the area we were fishing we re located and started catching them again. Don landed more over slot fish and even got a top of the slot fish to bring home for dinner. Some days the big ones just want to bite, congrats on your biggest redfish Don!

Michael from Connecticut was down on business for an afternoon in St. Petersburg and wanted to get our for a short two hour window on the water after his meeting and before his flight. The weather worked out and the tide was perfect for a quick redfish session so we slid the kayaks into the water on Tampa Bay and made a short paddle out.

It didn’t take long for Mike to connect on only his 3rd cast of the day with the gold spoon! We weren’t able to fish long but we still made it happen and Mike made it to his flight on time. Look forward to fishing with you again in the future Mike!

Got Mike from Montana out in the kayaks for a day in Tampa Bay. We launched at 7 and paddle out into a flat calm morning. We started off throwing topwaters and got several blow ups from redfish and trout. After the topwater bite slowed we started working spoons and Mike picked up a few redfish and trout on the spoon. The sea breeze picked up just in time for our paddle in and we made the easy paddle back with the breeze on our backs.

Got Chris Hansen from Nevada out on Thursday for some redfish action in Tampa Bay. We eased the kayaks into the water shortly after 7 with a stiff breeze at our backs. Chris wanted to fly fish, but unfortunately the stiff winds would make fly fishing difficult. We were able to find cruising reds to sight fish to in shallow water, but with no connections we moved on.

We switched over to spinning gear and it didn’t take long for Chris to get on the action. Chris caught fish on spoons and CAL shad and split tail baits. We ended up catching 12 reds to 29″ with most of the fish being upper slot and healthy.

Got my buddy Sam out in the kayak for an evening sun down session throwing topwaters. We had a small window with only a few hours of day light left and a storm fast approaching from the east but we launched the kayaks into the evening anyway.

We made a short paddle to our destination and began throwing topwater plugs along the edges of grass flats during the falling tide. It didn’t take long for our She Dogs to start getting popped by trout and redfish. We each ended up catching and releasing several redfish and large trout before we were chased off the water by rain.

Got out on the water with Reggie Tuesday for her birthday. We launched our kayaks into Tampa Bay shortly after 7 am and began working topwater She Dogs through mullet schools. She got a few blow ups on her lure but no connections. Reggie was able to quickly master the technique of walking the dog, a technique necessary for many top water baits.. not bad for her first time using lures!

Once the tide began coming in well, we made a move to another spot where I instructed her to start using a gold spoon. It didn’t take long for her to begin catching fish. After several fish we switched baits to a DOA cal shad tail and she continued to catch several more fish. She ended with two chunky fish to take home for dinner as well!

We fished one other area on the way in without much success before finally calling it a great day. Here are the pics, enjoy. And happy birthday Reggie!
